Production Notes
“Let Me Go” originated from a high-school short story assignment titled Immune in which a small section focused on two sibling characters, Christian and Marie, leaving Paris during the syphilis epidemic in 1495.
That period section became the central conflict in writing a script in the Film Seminar class at Ringling College of Art + Design. “It was always meant to be an STD awareness story, but it was a matter of finding the story.” The time period and conflict was a perfect setting in the relationship of the characters.
The following semester in Screenwriting, Turner kept the story on the back burner. “Many people asked me, ‘Where did Christian get the virus, and what happened to them?’ These questions were answered when the character Philip slowly came into the story. He was Christian’s love interest, and the original hosts of the virus.” The six-page screenplay became too complicated, and impossible to shoot for production concerns. “I had to go back to my film seminar script with just the two characters. It needed to be a historical period piece, STD, self-inflicting disease for the main character to feel guilty. I wanted to have some sort of salvation at the end of the story.”
“But many openly stated that it was the best film they had seen.” Turner stated. “Everyone that has seen the film and grew up in the 80’s has openly stated they felt like they were watching their life up on the big screen. This is the most rewarding aspect in making this film.”
